Hickinbotham

Hickinbotham Clarendon Vineyard, established in 1971, is located in the Clarendon sub-region on the northern edge of McLaren Vale, South Australia. The vineyard, originally planted with dry-grown Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, has a rich history and has provided grapes for some of Australia's most iconic wines.

In 2012, the estate was acquired by the Jackson Family Wines, after which it began producing wines under its own label. Under the leadership of winemaker Christopher Carpenter, who has been at the helm since 2012, the estate has continued and strengthened its legacy.

The vineyard covers 67 hectares and stretches from the hilltops above the village of Clarendon to the Onkaparinga River in the gorge below. The unique location and diverse terroir contribute to the production of wines with distinct character and complexity.

Hickinbotham Clarendon Vineyard is known for its high-quality wines, including the 'Trueman' Cabernet Sauvignon and the 'Brooks Road' Shiraz. The 'Trueman' Cabernet Sauvignon is praised for its aromas of dark chocolate and blackberry pie, with subtle hints of mint, cedar and tobacco.

The 'Brooks Road' Shiraz, named after the street on which the vineyard is located, shows the captivating character of the single site with a full body and fine, long tannins.

With a commitment to quality and a deep respect for the land, Hickinbotham Clarendon Vineyard continues to play a prominent role in the Australian wine industry, combining its rich heritage with modern winemaking techniques to produce world-class wines.

The 2018 Hickinbotham The Revivalist Merlot is a beautiful and layered wine from McLaren Vale, Australia. This wine highlights the revival of Merlot as a grape that, in the right hands and terroir, can produce wines of unprecedented depth and elegance. Produced at the historic Hickinbotham Clarendon Vineyard, this wine reflects the region's unique character and dedication to craftsmanship.

The grapes for The Revivalist are hand-harvested and carefully selected from vineyards with calcareous soils and a mild climate, ensuring an optimal balance between ripeness and freshness. This combination results in a Merlot that is both powerful and refined.

In the glass, the wine shows a deep ruby colour with purple highlights. The bouquet is intense and expressive, with aromas of black cherries, plums, cedar and a hint of spice. On the palette, The Revivalist Merlot 2018 offers a velvety texture, ripe tannins and remarkable depth. Flavours of cassis, dark chocolate and a hint of vanilla lead to a long, elegant finish.

The wine has matured for 15 months in French oak barrels, 50% of which are new. This ageing adds complexity and a subtle spiciness, without overpowering the wine's fruity core.

The Revivalist Merlot 2018 has a storage potential of 10 to 15 years and pairs excellently with dishes such as roast duck, rack of lamb or a rich aubergine lasagne. A shining example of how Merlot can shine in McLaren Vale's unique terroir, this wine offers an exceptional tasting experience for lovers of elegant, well-structured wines.
