Petrolo

Located in Tuscany's picturesque Val d'Arno di Sopra, Petrolo is a historic estate celebrated for its exceptional wines that effortlessly combine tradition and innovation. The estate, with a history dating back to the Middle Ages, comprises 272 hectares, of which 31 hectares are planted with vineyards, 19 hectares with olive trees and the rest consists of woods and unspoilt nature. The unique location on the hills of the Apennines, with an altitude of 250 to 450 metres, offers an ideal microclimate and soils rich in clay and limestone, which gives the wines their complexity and elegance.

Petrolo's philosophy revolves around creating wines that reflect the terroir and unique characteristics of each grape. Under the leadership of Luca Sanjust, the estate has developed into one of the most renowned producers in Tuscany, with a strong focus on sustainability and minimalist winemaking practices. Grapes are hand-harvested and carefully selected, while vinification takes place with minimal intervention to preserve the purity and expression of the terroir.

Petrolo's flagship wine is Galatrona, a 100% Merlot considered one of the best expressions of the grape outside Bordeaux. In addition, the estate produces other iconic wines such as Bòggina, a rich Sangiovese, and Torrione, an elegant blend that reflects the heart of Petrolo. Each wine reflects the team's commitment to quality, precision and authenticity.

Petrolo is not only a producer of exceptional wines but also an ambassador of the Val d'Arno di Sopra, a lesser-known but emerging region known for its diversity and potential. Combining tradition, craftsmanship and forward thinking, Petrolo remains a beacon of excellence in the Tuscan wine world.

The 2017 Petrolo Galatrona is an iconic Tuscan wine from the prestigious Petrolo estate in the Val d'Arno di Sopra. Considered one of the best expressions of the grape outside Bordeaux, this 100% Merlot is known for its depth, elegance and complexity. The vineyard, located at an altitude of 250 to 450 metres, benefits from an ideal microclimate and soils rich in clay and limestone, ensuring exceptional concentration and balance in the wine.

The 2017 vintage, a warm and dry vintage, has produced a wine of remarkable ripeness and intensity. In the glass, Galatrona 2017 presents itself with a deep, opaque ruby colour. The bouquet is lush and expressive, with aromas of blackcurrants, plums, violets and a hint of spice. As the wine opens up, nuances of graphite, dark chocolate and a subtle earthy tone emerge.

On the palette, the Galatrona offers an impressive combination of power and finesse. The ripe, velvety tannins are perfectly balanced by lively acidity, while flavours of cassis, black cherries and tobacco develop in a long, layered finish.

The wine has matured for 18 months in French oak barrels, 40% of which are new, adding to its complexity and structure without overpowering the fruit. This careful ageing process enhances the Galatrona's depth and refinement.

The 2017 Petrolo Galatrona is a wine with great storage potential of 15 to 20 years and is an excellent companion to refined dishes such as roast lamb chops, osso buco or a creamy risotto with truffles. It is a wine that reflects Petrolo's craftsmanship and dedication and offers an unforgettable experience for lovers of great Tuscan wines.
