Bodegas Félix Callejo

Bodegas Félix Callejo is a family-run winery from the village of Sotillo de la Ribera, located in the heart of Ribera del Duero. Founded in 1989 by Félix Callejo, the estate grew simultaneously with the region's rise to become one of today's most terroir-driven producers.

The vineyards rise to around 930 metres altitude, where cool nights ensure freshness, excitement and elegance in the wines. The combination of calcareous soils, sand, clay and old river deposits gives each cuvée a distinct character and precision.

Today, the estate is run by the second generation. José Félix gained international experience at companies including Pétrus, while Noelia worked at Eisele Vineyard. This background translates into a clear vision: to make wines that reflect the terroir of Sotillo de la Ribera as purely as possible.

Whereas Ribera was traditionally known for power and use of wood, Callejo deliberately opts for finesse, balance and precision. The wines, mainly based on Tinto Fino (Tempranillo), combine depth and structure with striking freshness and a refined texture, making them ideally suited to gastronomy.

The Finca Valderoble is a characterful red wine from Bodegas Félix Callejo of Ribera del Duero, impressively combining power and elegance. This wine comes from a specific vineyard, where terroir and precision are central in both the vineyard and the cellar.

The blend consists of mainly Tinto Fino (Tempranillo), supplemented by around 25% Merlot, which adds roundness and refinement. The grapes are harvested by hand from vineyards rising to around 930 metres altitude. The poor, calcareous soils and continental climate ensure low yields and grapes with high concentration and retention of freshness.

In the glass, the wine presents itself with a deep ruby red colour. The bouquet is intense and layered, with aromas of ripe blackcurrants, plums and cherries, complemented by notes of cocoa, spices and subtle toasted wood. On the palette, the Finca Valderoble offers powerful structure, ripe tannins and a nice balance between fruit and acidity, with the Merlot providing a softer texture and extra roundness. Flavours of dark fruit, liquorice and a slight mineral touch lead to a long, complex finish.

The wine matures for around 18 months in French oak barrels, some of which are new, adding depth and structure without overpowering the fruit.

The Finca Valderoble is an excellent companion to rich meat dishes such as lamb saddle, beef and game. With its concentration and balance, this wine has great storage potential and continues to develop in bottle.
